UMG Removes Music from TikTok: Why This is Good for Smaller Artists

TikTok creators woke up a few days ago to find many of their best dance videos without music. Not just any music, music from some of the biggest artists, like Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Drake.

Why does this matter? TikTok is THE place for artists to share their newest releases and gain virality via other TikTok creators making videos to the tune of their music. This has been the way since at least the early Covid times of 2020, if not before.

Without TikTok to allow a song to run rampant in mere hours, UMG artists will go back to releasing songs via other social channels.

What does this mean for smaller artists on TikTok? This is your time to shine small artists! The big fish have left the pond and creators are looking for new tunes to dance and create memes to. If you haven’t already, create an artists account on TikTok to ensure your music is associated with your TikTok account, and start making videos with your music.

Post 2-3 times a day, the more you post, the more potential people have to discover your content. Get more tips for growing on TikTok and going viral here.

We don’t know how long the big artists won’t be on TikTok, but we do know while they’re gone, you have a higher chance of going viral and getting your music out to the masses!
